Celebrating 25 Years
Making Living Easier
From pioneering portable accessible bathrooms to launching new accessibility-focused businesses, our story has always been shaped by practical problem-solving and genuine care for the people we serve. And while a lot has changed over 25 years, one thing hasn’t:
Our belief that great solutions are built by people who truly care.
We’re pretty proud of our journey, making living easier for New Zealanders over the years…
2001
The Beginning
Highlander began as a rental caravan business, founded by David Paul and inspired by his family’s connection to Highland dancing. Soon after, Dave was joined by co-director Mark Waldin.

2011
Innovation Born from Necessity
After Dave’s Uncle faced a sudden medical event, the situation exposed a lack of accessible home solutions in New Zealand. The Highlander team rallied and engineered a smart portable bathroom solution. The pop-up accessible bathroom was born, changing how people transitioned from medical care back into independent living.
2012
First ACC Purchase
Highlander’s first portable accessible unit was purchased by ACC, validating a solution that would go on to help countless New Zealanders.

2022
The Next Generation
A new chapter began as Dave’s son Cam and son-in-law Rob stepped into co-director roles alongside Dave. Together, they continue to balance innovation, practicality, and strong family values.
2025
Continuing to Grow
Rob joined Highlander full-time as Dave began enjoying a well-earned semi-retirement. Highlander also launched Accessible Ramps NZ, expanding the commitment to accessible living solutions.

2026
Celebrating 25 Years
Today, Highlander celebrates 25 years of helping make living easier for New Zealanders.
And this is only the beginning.
Looking Ahead
Our commitment remains the same
As Highlander looks to the future, our commitment remains the same - creating practical, thoughtful solutions that help people live with greater independence, dignity, and confidence. We’re proud of where we’ve come from. And excited about where we’re going next.
